Use Obsidian, setup a remote git backup (free) or pay them a few bucks a month for their sync service. No excuse for losing your files in 2026.

Bonus is: Obsidian is the best tool for writing and connecting ideas.

Ping me if you need help - seriously

I second Mick. Obsidian is the tool for Zettelcasten and short- or medium- form writing. It offers natural linking to source materials. It can generate PDFs, HTMLs, etc. Plug-ins offer backup either through git or on the local computer which you can transfer to a USB key.

No it's just a very good text editor. You can layer all kinds of things on top of it, like interconnection graphs, but at its base it's just a text editor that edits regular markdown files that are stored in regular folders on your computer.

I use it for research, random ideas, planning/tracking projects, everything. But writing foremost.

I'm not sure what you use currently to write. Maybe you just type words into the box on Substack.com, but nearly every platform/system supports the Markdown file format, you can often just copy-paste, or you can export to different formats as needed.

«Also, I lost all my files. Again, oh well.»

Really happy that happened to you because "getting burned" is the only way for ordinary people to find the motivation to do backups or use something like "Time Machine".

I do backups to two flash drives (partial) and two hard disks (full) in rotation.

Depending on situation two distinct "cloud" backups can also help but most likely some security service (etc.) will be scanning them ("because paedophiles and terrorists" :->), so I use that only for public files.

As far as I know, Apple scans your own laptop's hard driven for pedophilic and terrorist materials.

I would be more than happy to send you an occasional financial contribution (extra to my subscription) but having no remaining friends makes the 'gift subscription' a non runner for me. Maybe I am missing something, but I can't find any way to just simply send you a gift payment. Would be nice if there was a BIG "donation" button within easy reach for whenever the notoriously fleeting generosity urge next comes on!

BTW, I really appreciate all of your writings but especially those journeying the esoteric/metaphysical.

Know you are highly respected and treasured - by this lone Celtic wanderer!

So it's clean slate? Cool!

Have you heard of backups? Buy an external hard drive and start doing backups. IIRC you have a MAC, so you can use time machine and never lose anything again.

I would be interested in your thoughts on this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utkhD0Gypro&t=1940s It seems to give some plausible motives to historical events.
