A member of the Russian elite dies in a freak accident? Happenstance. Then another dies in similar circumstances? Could be written off as a coincidence. But a spiralling body count of 23 deaths in less than a year has sparked fears of “enemy action”, as Auric Goldfinger famously put it to James Bond in the classic spy book.

Since late January 2022, Russia’s accident-prone business tycoons are rapidly in danger of becoming an endangered species.

The string of mysterious deaths has attracted global attention, with growing fears sinister forces are at play, even though the deaths have mostly been attributed to misadventure and mental health issues.

The trail of bloodshed, which started shortly before Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, has spanned time zones and continents.

The manner of death has varied from the seemingly straightforward (strokes and suicides) to freak accidents (falling down stairs or from a speeding boat) to the downright bizarre (poisoning from a shaman’s toad venom).

The youngest of the fatalities was 37 and the oldest 73. They have included feared military leaders, billionaire oil and gas oligarchs, top business executives, high-ranking public servants and, the latest, a “sausage tycoon”.

The article provided by the Sydney Morning Herald had pictures and short bios of the dead men which is why I linked it. However, the article is forced to point out that if Putin’s launched another shoah within Russia then Putin is also killing off his own allies. In other words, not only are people who are Putin’s enemies (supposedly) dropping dead, but men who seem to be involved with the military and, in particular war tech and weapons production are dying too. The lying media, naturally, buries the lede and lumps all these death under one category and throws the blame at Putin. In other words, they say that Putin is killing off the oligarchs but then mention that it’s not just anti-Putin oligarchs that are dropping dead…

But the thesis that anti-Putin oligarchs are dropping dead is interesting enough for now and worth exploring in its own right.

A question we ought to pose to ourselves is whether or not there is any corroborating evidence of a plot against the oligarchs. Don’t get me wrong, killing them off is fine and I wholeheartedly support and advocate for their gruesome dismemberment as a rule (and their families as well, frankly). So I would only have more respect for Putin if this was all true and I’m not trying to cover for the man if this is indeed true. Quite the opposite, I don’t want to fall prey to wishful thinking. All I see is an unusually large number of dead oligarchs and other important people over the last year.

But I would like to have some corroborating evidence, like if this was all occurring to a backdrop of economic reforms or efforts to nationalize the economy. So far, nothing of the kind has been observed or even articulated by the higher-ups. Furthermore, the fact that not one of the major, well-known and well-connected Yidividual oligarchs has jumped out of his window yet has not escaped me and also causes me to doubt. Even if this is a clean-up of sorts, it’s not thorough and might be better explained as a warning shot off the bow of the other oligarchs, or the current top dogs getting the green light to eat up their competitors and snap up some more assets to keep them loyal.

But what does this mean for the power balance within Russia?

Well, remember, the two castes battling it out for supremacy in Russia in the post-Soviet coliseum are the Spooks and the Crooks (siloviks and oligarchs). If there is indeed a concerted assassination campaign underway, then you better believe that it’s the spooks who are doing it because they have both the means and the motive to do it.

Liberals routinely accuse Putin’s Russia of being run like a mafia state. They are, of course, telling the truth on this count, but also lying by omission.

Remember, REAL politics of the kind that actually matters instead of just the trading of baseball cards that passes for politics in the Human Rights Freedom Love Democracies of the West is when an entire caste fights for dominance against another caste. And in Russia, the Liberals are simply shills for the Oligarch caste and want them to defeat the Silovik caste. Their solution to the Spook State is to simply impose the Crook State in its place. The West, for its part, when it talks about spreading its freedoms and values across the world actually means putting the Oligarchs and their preferred ideology in power: Liberalism.

That’s what’s really going on. It’s caste war, stupid!

Me, I reject the binary 0 - 1 code of the control matrix and always seek to stake out a truly independent third position. I don’t like either the Spooks or the Crooks and would rather have the Soldiers running things. The best chance Russia ever had at recovering from the mess of the 90s, the collapse of the USSR and the aggression of NATO lay with the wildly popular General Lebed, who was killed by either the Spooks or the Crooks, and with him, Russia’s best chance of rising from her knees.

A useful corollary to the above observation is the understanding that there can be no meaningful political change when the masses are simply tricked into voting for candidates from within the same caste. If you’re voting for one corrupt oligarch over another cycle after cycle, one politician from the monoparty over another, one technocrat from the same school over another, etc and you still end up surprised that nothing ever changes then you deserve the contempt and scorn that your rulers have for you.

Anyways, if the Oligarchs are purged, then the Siloviks will simply take over their assets.

This is a typical half-measure that would be entirely in-line with Putin’s general half-assed way of doing things. Instead of doing away with the problem of Oligarchy he tries to intimidate individual oligarchs into being loyal or replaces them with his own Judo buddies.

Now, this all begs the question: would a Russia run by Spooks be better than a Russia run by Crooks?

Well, yes, as much as I hate glow-in-the darks, I think it would be an improvement on pretty much all counts.

For one, you’d have patriotic corruption at the norm, at least. In other words, stolen assets would at least stay in the country because the Siloviks wouldn’t be able to stash them abroad with their Western cousins as the oligarchs are notorious for doing.

Also, you’d have less concerted political agitation and the peasants would be left to be apolitical instead of being enlisted by one oligarchic faction against another to fight to the death like knife-wielding monkeys. The Spook state would, instead, try to keep the peasants politically apathetic, which means that we’d be able to mellow out and treat one another better instead of having American-style tantrums over turkey at the dinner table.

Politics would come to resemble the period of Praetorian control in Rome, even more so than they do now, basically.

Overall, it’s not an ideal scenario by any stretch of the imagination.

But anything is an improvement over the bardak that Russia finds itself in now.
