As you know by now, there was a measure/law passed in Russia concerning the “discreditation of the war effort”. Basically, it seems to be akin to a kind of Patriot Act - a kind of dissent-curtailing measure. Despite the fact that free speech is enshrined in the Russian Constitution, it seems that it can easily be ignored in the case of an emergency. This also seems to imply that the next time there will be a plandemic or some other hoax, the government has now proven that it can pass speech laws to ban resistance to it.
I will have to read up on these new speech laws and do a deep-dive on them before I feel comfortable commenting on them any more. Stay tuned.
Now, I should be fair and point out that there have been some instances of people in the Liberal camp getting hit by these new measures, and, actually, even before the measures were formalized, they were already being harassed and rolled up. That is all well and good, and I have no pity for my enemies getting hit with what they would eventually inflict on people with my positions out of some mistaken allegiance to ephemeral values and principles. But now the other shoe is starting to fall and the Right-of-Kremlin patriotic dissidents appear to be the real target of the new law.
The investigation believes that on March 20, [Strelkov] posted a video where he insulted the authorities, advised them to remain silent, and not to justify themselves, and criticized the country's leadership of not fighting in 2014. When, in his words, it was possible to walk from Kharkov to Odessa practically without firing a single shot.
Also, the Ministry of Internal Affairs is going to investigate the "Angry Patriots Club" of the ex-Minister of Defense of the DPR and check for fraud. Allegedly, Girkin, together with his wife, received donations for the needs of the SVO, but did not report on them in any way, so the money could go anywhere.
Strelkov, commenting on the RBC news, said that he has not yet received any notification that law enforcement agencies have begun checking against him. “[I know] only from the Internet [that there will be a check to discredit the armed forces]. I take it quite calmly. Participation in social and political activities and journalism on sensitive political topics implies a willingness to answer for one’s words, therefore, if someone does not like my speeches, it is [appeal to the investigating authorities] a civil right of those who do not like it. So far, I haven't received anything officially... I'm not going to change my position in any way, no matter what sanctions I will follow for this. A change in my position can only come about if I see that the situation has changed. Until it has changed,” Strelkov said.
Last time, we spoke about a long-time Donbass veteran and hero of Russia who was set to be tried for complaining about the state of field medicine in the Donbass.
I warned that:
You see, as it becomes harder and harder to deny just how badly the Kremlin is waging this Not-War, the Right-of-the-Kremlin people are going to be targeted and silenced. Well, I am getting ahead of myself a bit here - one case does not prove anything yet and if the pushback is sufficient, the government might drop it. But you can see why the Kremlin would want the option to be able to clamp down on the “Sixth Column” as the Birdman used to call it, of patriots who actually fought and bled for their country.
Can’t have them start demanding better leadership, now can we?
If this veteran war hero and field medic can get hit by this new law, then the entire pessimist camp of Russian patriots who are fed up with how this Not-War is being run will be at risk of being arrested next. After all, they have said a lot more “inflammatory” things about the leadership in Moscow than this medic did.
And now the internet is ablaze with rumors that Strelkov is next, and that he is to be tried for criticizing the MoD and for embezzling donations meant for the front. The second charge is the equivalent of siccing the IRS on a political opponent in the US - a tried and true tactic of the powers that be.
What makes this whole development even more ominous is that Strelkov made a prophecy way back when that if he was asked to take a more active role by the government then this meant that the situation was still salvageable because some patriotic forces still existed in the government. But warned that if he were arrested, that there was no hope of victory or meaningful reform from within.
I wrote about it here.
You should check it out because, like all things I write about on this blog, it was prophetic and ahead of its time.
Now, we don’t know what will happen next. In contrast, the medic was swooped on fairly quickly, without any prior warning. Why there is advance warning this time can only be explained if there was a leak from the Ministry of the Interior. We can permit ourselves a sliver of optimism, then, by hoping that the news is fake, or, that the leak will somehow make the MoI reconsider.
But, if the Kremlin wanted to make an example out of someone, I can’t think of anyone better than Strelkov to make an example out of. The state media has already lambasted him on multiple occasions and saying hard truths wins a person as many, if not more, haters as admirers. Believe me, I know. And the FSB won’t have to arrest every single blogger complaining about the way this war is being waged if they can just make a public example of a handful of public figures like Strelkov.
It would be ironic if the man who started the Donbass rebellion ends up getting arrested by the government supposedly trying to liberate the Donbass. But, if you keep in mind that Moscow’s plan was to shove Donbass kicking and screaming back into Ukraine with Minsk I and II, it becomes clear that Strelkov’s rebellion is seen as an unfortunate development that slowed the process of convergence and that the Moscow elite resents him intensely for the wrench that he shoved into their machinations.
Strelkov’s arrest or possible gag order would be a serious loss for Russia’s patriots.
The man saw things with a clear head - a very rare quality which earned him criticism for being a “pessimist”, which I have come to realize, is yet another manipulative, morality-based, value-judgement that is used to discredit truth-tellers by the powers that be in the same way that the “conspiracy theorist” label is. “Pessimism” as a concept makes absolutely no sense and only entered our political lexicon as a slur to be hurled at reactionaries by progressives who were pushing drastic social, political and economic reforms on a skeptical and recalcitrant public in the 19th century. The original "pessimists” were pragmatic utopia-deniers who saw through the lies of the Left and so had to be stigmatized as losers and uncool grumps to force the agenda through. I use the word “pessimist” colloquially now to get my points across and without any value-judgement attached to it. But for the fist-pumping morons, the label of “pessimism” is a dirty word, a moral condemnation and an affront against their god all wrapped into one.
If you haven’t yet, take a look at this article in which I analyzed his predictions for 2023. Can’t you see that he was right? That he was righter than the 5D English-language bloggers like Birdman (RIP), Big Serge, Lira, Simplicius?
Also, let us allow ourselves to ask the question: why now?
If the war was going well and victory certain and soon, why make moves to start clamping down on Kremlin-criticizers? After all, these people will simply end up laughingstocks and covered in pie if, after months and years of predicting doom, the Russian MoD actually had it all in the bag.
Doesn’t it make more sense then that they are afraid of these people being proven right?
Cf Strelkov’s ominous prophesy with that of Rudolf Abel’s [‘Let’s see how they greet me’ from Bridge of Spies] 😇 --> youtu.be/1PQjqoCgYdA?t=101
Another weird development here is that Prigozhin has stopped his criticisms of MoD, he says they are being supplied adequately, he says Wagner is working with VDV in Bakhmut, and MoD has started mentioning Wagner in their updates. So something is up. Just a coincidence that the Kremlin is going after one group of patriots while surrendering to another? It looks to me like yet another compromise amongst the elite/ruling thieves. Prigozhin gets his supplies and some tangible support which I imagine the upper management of MoD was not happy about but now they get to go after less well connected but equally hated critics.
On a somewhat good note some powerful people have at least come out in support of the medic. I forget what oblast the guy was charged in but the governor came out against the prosecution and from what I understand offered to pay whatever fine he might get charged with. A governor counter signalling Moscow on behalf of a fighter is a good sign. Before it was just the governor of Crimea that had enough balls to openly disagree with the prevailing Kremlin narratives but getting another on board is nice to see.
The inner fighting and shit throwing amongst the Russian Patriotic community is such a bummer though. Its funny and entertaining watching Western dissedents go after eachother but with Russia the stakes are so much higher that its just not funny anymore. Just imagine if Strelkov had a shred of access to Prigozhins resources. He would have nothing whatsoever to worry about.
Its a lot easier for me to relate to Strelkovs idealism and uncompromising death grip on his principles than Prigozhins Patriotic opportunism. But I don't know. Russia really is the 3rd Rome if we are talking politics and well...in Rome and Constantinople politics were settled at sword point and killing your former allies was an acceptable practice that no one batted an eye at. I guess Im not sure where the line between admirable principles and completely avoidable martyrdom that accomplishes nothing is located with Strelkov.
Dont get me wrong I would spit on anyone who gets in bed with bonafide Gref, Chubias, and Abramovich tier Kremlinites. But the total inability of Russias pragmatic patriotic crooks and idealist to find any common ground is disheartening. For example Strelkov loathed Zarchencko and Tartarsky. Well they are dead now, almost definitely with Moscows blessing and pretty likely with Moscows passive help. So they are all in the same damn boat. Like no matter how much you hate them for not living up to your own principles you might as well as a citizen of the 3rd Rome start doing some Roman politics and take your allies of convenience where you can find them.
