Why the SMO was launched to begin with is a total mystery to me right now. When you say that it was maybe a preemptive attack I assume you are throwing that out there for lack of any other explanation. I don't have any ideas either but a preemptive attack seems way unlikely imo. I cant see FSB correctly predicting a Ukrainian attack under any circumstances. If the Ukrainians were about to attack its unlikely FSB would know because they arent interested in that kind of stuff to begin with. But even if they did know would they actually share this information with Putin or any Kremlin decision makers?

I suppose its possible that the information came from outside FSB and FSB tried to downplay it. When it became evident that Putin wanted some kind action they pretended to have assets on the ground and only a half ass intervention was necessary. Thats all I can come up with. But when you look at how nobody has been held accountable for the absolutely humiliating f(ck ups, how it seems like Putin avoids making decisions like the plauge, it seems weird that he would have triggered the SMO to begin with. Just how likely is it that Putin simultaneously believed that the Ukrainians were about to launch operation storm 2 and also all Russia needed to do to cause the Ukraine to collapse was send some lightly armed troops without any back up on a relaxed drive to Kiev? Does that make any sense?

The Russian professional Army, Wagner and the more hardcore DNR and LNR militias have despite all the disadvantages foisted on them done very well with very little. They gave NATO absolute hell at both Krasny Liman and Herson where they actually had a presence unlike around Kharkov. By absolutely no means has the war so far demonstrated that the Russians just suck at war. Russia has also demonstrated they can strike deep into Ukraine with their stand off weapons at will. When the Patriotic bloggers just outright chalk up all the failures so far to sabotage I tend to agree. The Russian elite really is shot through with traitors after all and we havent seen one clear cut NATO victory yet that wasnt handed to them with gift wrapping and a bow on top. Perhaps im just coping here but I do think Russia already has the means to win this and all thats lacking is will at the top. So far Strelkov hasnt been wrong about anything and hopefully he was right when he said that if he was allowed to go to the front that Russia would win in the end.

A personal note: I "started paying attention to Russia" long ago when my mother gave me a copy of "Crime and Punishment" as I went off to college saying "Smart people read Russian novels"

On odd omission to your valuable summary? - Seizure of Crimea and the incursion of 2014 - I think that belongs here.

I left a "demographic crisis" note over at Occidental - that's gotta be part of the going forward mix - the bio-security state is not merely an incidental add on to the NWO - so: how about the Russian Idea offers some population health innovations (notice I did not say "public health") - starting with some serious natalism promoting policies - how about some "post vaccine/medication models of population health" - and get rid of the population surveillance projects - reject vaccine passports for entry to Russia - announce it now - this is just a start - if Russia wants to be "sovereign state" it has got to start acting like one - we are at a point where that's easy - or should be. But I think you are a lonely voice - the elites no longer want to run sovereign states - it's too hard and the beautiful people and cuisine at Davos are so delightful!
