i was glad you were kind to lira in your thoughtful eulogy. he was one of those characters we run into in life that are reckless and play the fool and one way or the other burn out quick often in weird sordid circumstances. he was best in his interviews of whoever, he was easily amused with an open laugh, interested and had heart. he had a big life force in his foolhardy way. i hated to hear he just ignominiously—died in some prison.

re your sick thing. serbs have a saying, "pain is weakness leaving the body." that said, ive had similar symptoms for weeks, weird fevers all night, no sleep, and now some kind of flu. don't take antibiotics. im riding this one out like a serb minus any alcohol but ive got things to do and this is a total drag. good luck on getting better, brat.

I liked Lira and am sad he is dead, if he is in fact dead.

But the guy was extremely reckless, posting publicly pro-Russian stuff (which was totally wrong) while living in Ukraine-controlled Kharkov.

He had plenty of opportunities to leave the country but did not take them up, he could have vblogged from anywhere.

He had some kind of death wish...

Yes I never understood why he didn't get out. He only vlogged on the street a few times to prove where he was but he could of been anywhere. He was on to something when he spoke about epistemic viscousness in the West and I wonder if anyone got a solid draft of that book he was writing.

Alexander Mercouris, who was a close remote friend and frequent associate of Lira's, said he urged Lira many times to leave Ukraine, but Lira's two children were in Ukraine and he wanted to be near them. I guess that means Lira was separated from the mother.

I don't think Lira was that important one way or another. He was used by the Ukraine authorities to signal that any dissidence at all would be dealt with harshly. The US State Department, following its traditional role of ignoring the plight of US citizens without political pull, was fully on board.

I think it's noteworthy that Ritter actually had a long interview with Viktor Bout after Bout was released. It took awhile to find it since YouTube terminated Ritter's account. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JE0sNQK6wrg&t=6s

Also, there was bad blood between Lira and Ritter for a long time. Lira routinely referred to Ritter as a pedophile. Ritter's remarks on LIra may or may not reflect a direct Russian interest.

I was going to say this exact same thing, there was always a strange beef between the two, even Ritter's wife was getting in on it. Both men seem to be quite petty and fantastical in their own right at times, so I think it was merely Ritter rationalizing the fact he hated Lira when he wrote that mumbo jumbo.

Before his arrest Lira had turned from criticising Ukraine to criticising the people who run America. An American abroad, beyond the protection of the mythical constitution, criticising (((them))) or their puppets in an election year where the incumbent looks weak would have been a target for Nuland and her cookies. It is far more likely that she or one of her associates told their stooges in Kiev to make him disappear than that the regime in Kiev cared about someone whose audience was mainly American and who was probably not known to many Ukrainians. His blood is upon the heads of the (((neocons))) as well as the SBU. Gonzalo Lira RIP.

Nuland was the first name that popped into my head too. He did an amazing character assassination of not just her but her whole family. And she wanted blood.

Expand full comment

His best work was his exposure of Nuland and his showing that the Bucha massacre was done by the Ukrainians and that their propaganda videos were faked. The locals pretty much ignored him even after that, but he relied too much on the 'exorbitant privilege' of American citizenship when he was beyond whatever protection he might have had in the USA, and he became a minor embarrassment to the people who have the real privileges in the USA.

Agreed. I liked his expansion on the epistemic viciousness theory and wonder if he gave a draft of his book on the West to anyone before being detained.

Nice job. And all delivered with your customary clear (and dry) eyed realism. The West's hypocritical clinging to the notion of free speech becomes more tenuous with every passing day. At least when Russia acts like a gangster-spook state, it's not remotely surprising. Because that's what it is.

There was rumour in Spanish news once of Lira having worked for the CIA but it seems that was just rumour. For all his faults, I liked the guy and was very sorry to see him captured and killed. He always seemed to only want the best for us. Thanks for this uniquely sober eulogy and get well soon. Chemists will stock some kind of vitamin C pills so load up on those to gut tolerance, drink plenty of broth and water, and stay warm. Also, nasal rinses with dilute iodine solution help a lot. Hit up the FLCCC website for details.

Often, as I read your reporting of all-things-Russia, juxtapositioned with the daily political war-party reporting omnipresent here in the U.S., it's hard to escape the suspicion that we may all be fighting the same hydra-headed evil. "May you live in interesting times," as the Chinese curse puts it.

How penicillin (antibiotic) work exact?

Internetsky:

Penicillin works best on gram-positive bacteria by inhibiting peptidoglycan production, making the cells leaky and fragile. The cells burst open and are much easier for the immune system to break down, which helps the sick person heal more quickly. (bacteria cells, ALL bacteria cells, even the good, so can ingest too much... and die. Again, contrare to longevity. Not take too much please.)

I don't get why he didn't flee the country when he had the chance, it's not like no one could have seen this coming.

His ego got the best of him, he just had to livestream his (attempted) escape. Contrast this to Alexander Semchenko, who went radio silent for almost a year while going from safe house to safe house until he crossed into Russia and was able to tell the story.

The Lira story is yet to be told. His story is all very fishy . Why was he allowed to speak at all

? Who were his handlers? For months he ran his anti-West , pro Putin propaganda unimpeded , got arrested and then came back and carried on although he had impunity from further action against him . Was he really vlogging from inside the war zone in the places he. If you do dumb shit like run a propaganda champaign from inside a war zone you must expect extreme prejudice to find you.

Turns out Gonzalo was a tool despite his 150 IQ.

The Ukie spooks knew where he was the whole time and used him as a stool pigeon to smoke out dissenters. God knows how many ended up being tortured etc. because of him.

Things aren't always what they seem.

Your post totally misrepresents the video. It's true Lira was shadowed by the SBU after his initial release. But Lira contacted nobody within the Ukraine jurisdiction, and he had made no contacts when he tried the border crossing. He was on his own and was picked up by the SBU. There was nothing at all to indicate Lira was a tool and nothing that indicated anyone was exposed as a result of his activities.

Gonzalo "Bond without the babes" Lira evades Ukie spooks with derring-do and wit - wihout being able to speak Ukie. I had seen earlier suggestions that Lira was at least being used to paint Ukie dissenters if not an agent himself.

If the Ukies asked the CIA to trace his net communications would they have obliged? Presuming they couldn't do it themselves. Crooks aren't necessarily all dopes especially with state funding and resources.

All things considered it is far more likely Lira was an unwitting tool. Seems he got totally hooked on the dopamine/adrenaline rush of the attention and danger.

Expand full comment

I recognize what you're saying, but I think the way you put it was misleading. If Lira was unknowingly being used by the SBU, it would be more accurate to describe him as "pawn" or "dupe", rather than as a "tool". "Tool" suggest some voluntary cooperation. Although you did say "unwitting tool" in your last post.

My opinion is that the CIA was likely tracking Lira, with or without SBU requests. But, I don't remember anything in Lira's broadcasts to indicate a confidential Ukrainian source. I think he got most of his information from the video hosts who had him on as a guest.

Observing Ulies who were following and/or commenting on Lira's Youtube videos would have been sufficient to attract spook attention especially from those who were out of favor or had disirable assets

Also, I hope you feel better soon. My wife works in a pharmacy. The Western overreliance on antibiotics, painkillers and anti-depressants will eventually do us in if our global arrogance doesn't get us first. Keep up the good work.
