I readRussia Times and Sputnik all the time. It’s the only place place to find out what’s actually going on. I pay zero attention to Western clown media. Putin and others DEFINITELY need to begin talking to Westerners directly. We are ready!

And more speeches in English, frankly. I know Russian leaders make a point of speaking in their native language so as not to kowtow to the West but face it, English is the lingua franca of the modern world so if you want to influence the West or indeed the world, you have to speak English.

nb4. kowtow & lingua franca ain't even English.

nb44. Lavrov's English is good. Putin's English sounded silly the last time I heard him talk so maybe never mind for him. To quote Dax Shephard, "You sound like a fag," Mr. Putin. Sorry had to be said. 😊

Support doesn't even need to be formal. Bloggers and livestreamers make money through paid subscriptions, patreons, and superchats. Just set up thousands of bot accounts and funnel money towards voices that are saying things you like. It's pretty obvious that breadtubers are largely supported in this fashion by Soros et al.

Exactly. But if dissident accounts in the West start getting lavish funding, imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth. The three letter agencies will move heaven and earth to trace the money and then shut down accounts or platforms for being #MuhRussiaCollusion. It'll make the Red Scare look tame by comparison.

Not necessairly. It can't happen fast and it can't happen all at once. Also, it must happen through many different avenues. Example - Russia should fund athlete youtubers, hot female streamers, onlyfans girls, etc. Why? This way it will be much harder to trace Russian government "Active measures" initiatives, as it just seems like Russians like to donate to everything. And next, it can be used to spread a message much more effectively than just political bloggers. If everyone's favorite hot female game streamer periodically "lets slip" her political opinions, all of her coomer followers will adopt them if it happens often enough. If onlyfans girls sometimes spread a narrative Russia wants spread, this will also begin to influence the youth and urban elite. This is the only way to do it.

Or you could just hire a pretty vlogger to promote Russian culture.

Your idea seems unnecessarily cloak and dagger.

ScipioAfricanus's avatar

A single vlogger doesn't reach the largest possible audience and many different age groups. Indeed, there's a reason why the US targets Russia through so many organizations (NGOs, student groups, bloggers, etc) - its easier to spread the message they want and harder to stop/catch. Effective active measures and propaganda must reach the largest possible number of people possible.

I was only applying the American methods to Russia.

Yep. Which may be a factor in Russia not providing such support.

Expand full comment
John Goode's avatar

Yep. And they'd try to put the bloggers in jail for "knowingly" taking money from the Russian government - even if the money originated not from the Russian government but say, from a patriotic Russian oligarch (an anti-Soros) and even if there were 20 layers of financial intermediaries and the bloggers knew nothing about it. Heck, we're almost at the point where commenters like you and me on this site can get charged for having opinions that disagree with the powers that be. Is it illegal yet to oppose sending $40B to Ukraine? Oh well, I'm trying to exercise my 1st Amendment rights while I still have them.

nb4. Of course for a blogger like Rolo who lives outside the West (I think), he'd have nothing to fear except his account getting shut down. And if he gets ruble donations *outside* of Substack and the Western banking system in general, then good luck to the three-letter agencies in tracing it. Not that I'm advocating that, mind you. Just sayin' that would be very, very bad. Glowies you oughtta get on that... 😊

Well Russia should not fear a blowback at this point look what Biden is sending to ukraine he is meddler #1. And many in usa are not happy what Biden is sending to Ukraine. Biden 'lost' a bunch of equipment and money in Afghanistan and now is sending extreme amounts of cash and gear to Ukraine. We are fed up!!!! We dont want this !!! I can speak strongly for myself and I am a westerner. This is our money totally abused! This is against many peoples will here. I think they see this is idiotic. biden is idiotic. And who cheated for Biden and why? It seems China had a hand in it and some pings went to Russia....well which faction helped there? And is it worth it? Only the China Russia connection makes me uncomfortable. While I would be willing to listen to Russia I don't like the authoritarian style of China. It is too authoritarian for any westerner. We dont like this period but we feel closer to Russia in some way because of Christianity. It def. Connects. It seems we holding similar values.

The idea of Russia building relationships with dissident bloggers in the US makes so much sense that it is hard for me to imagine Russia doing it. Too bad because there is a golden opportunity.

It seems that most people in America and Russia suffer from what Michael Crichton called Gel Mann Amnesia. Nearly everyone who voted for Trump and the small dissident left know that nearly everything in the media about America is a lie. But then they read or hear something about Russia or China and assume (since they don't directly know the issues) that it is the truth. It isn't. It is just another lie

Sounds like Russians do the same thing. They know that everything the Jewish media writes about Russia is a lie but assume the stories about America are true. No, they are just as big of lies as the ones about Russia.

“Anyways, I reached out to Senator Pushkov. If he wants to get acquainted with the dissident underground in the West, I’d be happy to provide him with the links and give him the full run-down. I’m not holding my breath, but, hey, no one will be able to accuse me of not trying after this.” >

Yes!! You are uniquely equipped for this, good work. I appreciate the effort.

It isn't even underground at all. Regular people getting censored. Regular people who see the unwillingness of the usa to come to a peaceful solution and willing to endanger the whole west and throw all our money away. Its more people than you think. We have still our own minds...just its getting suppressed and deleted so you think we dont exist.

The conservative pro-Christian elements of Russian culture are definitely appealing to mainstream American "conservatives" (really just Republican voters). We all know Putin banned LGBT propaganda just like Reps want to do. Another notable mainstream event was that awful US Army ad with the girl with two moms juxtaposed to the manly, tough Russian military ad.

Republican voters are at least semi-aware that Russia is a more manly, conservative, Christian country which is how they want things. Coupled with the fact that Russia seems to be a Democrat boogeyman (enemy of my enemy is my friend) I think there's some potential here for Russia to ally with American Republican voters. If the Democrats all think "the Reps are in bed with Russia!" why not just make it happen anyway?

"At the very least, Russia could inform its citizens about the plight of ordinary Americans who have been labelled terrorists or foreign agents by their own federal government for holding the wrong political views - views that are considered mainstream and normal in Russia, by the way."

...but that's what RT did/does. I got into many arguments, trying to point out that RT never outright lied, but scrupulously presented stories that showed the west in a less-than-glittering light.

RT is extremely well-done, but as such, it's competing with the western MSM, whose propaganda and deception is peerless. RT is valiantly trying to play against a duplicitous home team on a severely tilted playing field. Its major weakness is its very effectiveness: it can be branded as a purveyor of disinformation exactly because the truths it purveys are so compellingly inconvenient.

I do agree that having more english-channel outlets would be helpful, as witnessed by the interest people are taking in what non-MSM bloggers are reporting about Ukraine. The main question is, can alternative channels ever acquire a voice strong enough to counter the cartoon news that the MSM provides for couch-potatoes and headline believers.

Russia needs to move away from boomer ideologies of controlling the Press and television. That is what boomers watch and reaching boomers is good, but largely irrelevant. The youth (esp in big cities) is who you want to influence, as they are the drivers of public opinion and will in the future sit in positions of power in the press, government and various institutions. This means Russia must focus on mediums interesting to the youth - bloggers. And not just any kind of bloggers - high school aged kids, college kids, and models. Especially female models. Hot female models, game streamers and girls in the political game in the West will do a great deal more to spread Russia's message to the world than RT, Sputnik or any tired news site that nobody of importance believes anyway. Also, Russia should work on improving its movie/music scene like South Korea.

South Korea has recently attained great cultural influence through Kpop and kdramas being popular on netflix (eg squid game), Russia should also start promoting their culture in a similar way but without gay movies like Rzhev or Zoya. Indeed, Russia's media scene is trying to carbon copy Hollywood without developing in its own direction like South Korea's has.

What a good idea. There is some conservatives who truly might understand the Russian situation and really do not want this war. Yet of course the current US regime will declare them as Russian sympatheizers and treasonous but we know why. It seems democrats trying to cover up a huge scandal and heavy international crimes they are and were involved in. Many in usa have seen the nastiness of the democrats. Personally they are vile to me and I am in usa. They lie and point moral fingers on everybody but they are themselves holier than thy. Their moral superiority has truly vanished though in reality if it ever was there.

"Dire straights" translates roughly into English as "desperate heterosexuals". OK, you might have a metaphorical point there. But even the rock band got it right, Dire Straits! It's of geographical/nautical derivation.

Just another envious boomer cheap shot from the peanut gallery I suppose. Well what can be expected when we've been spoiled by shitting on a golden toilet for so many years?
