I know and use the word to mean an approach to life characterized by being "open to new ideas, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; not bound by traditional thinking." However, it is difficult for most people who can be "liberal" in their personal, social or intellectual lives and remain so in politics. Politics rarely raises its head above the level of Antagonism, and in addition, people who are truly liberal are few and far between and for the most part would avoid politics with a ten foot pole. That leaves the term "liberal" in politics, basically up for grabs. And who often graps it? The snivelling and chronic Covertly Hostile, who smile and shake your hand while their paid lackey sneaks up from behind and thrusts a knife in your back.
Now if you on this blog and when writing about politics want to insist that "liberals" or Liberals are a bunch of deceitful cowards who like to keep armed guards around their properties because of all the secret crimes they have committed, that's fine. But I must attempt to defend my language and the word as it has been used in the materials I have studied and that thousands of others have also studied.
Other commentators (mostly "conservative") prefer to distinguish between Liberal and The Left. We are all familiar with the convention of locating Communism and Socialism on the Left. Currently Progressivism (in America) also resides there, along with Critical Theorists. None of these ideologies, howeve,r, are particularly liberal.
I am reminded that when push comes to shove in politics - particularly international politics - strong arm tactics often prevail. That is, the (mostly) angry generals get their way and we go to war instead of initiate a Third Party Investigation. This has to do with the effect that the threat of physical violence has on the human psyche as much as anything.
