If the Russians really wanted to achieve their stated goals they could have started by simply taking out the electrical infrastructure of Ukraine and demolishing all bridges and rail hubs in Western Ukraine. That would have made western Ukraine uninhabitable by winter and blocked supplies. Presto Ukraine would have been a virtual no man's land and the Nazis neutered. Or at least it seems that way to me
