He certainly is now, but I'm specifically addressing the 1996 election, where after the first round of voting, it seemed clear that the CPRF had excellent chances of defeating Yeltsin and his claque at the ballot box.
If Zyuganov was merely the other side of the same "convergence" agenda inside the RF, then why the mobilization of so many resources--and so much chicanery--in order to secure a Yeltsin victory?
Were Gorbachev and Yeltsin on opposite sides of the Andropov/Yakovlev schism? Like Gorbachev was Andropovs man and Yeltsin Yakovlevs? In that Russian GDR TV series which I hope they do English subs for one day the KGB guys working in the GDR are portrayed as solid Andropovites (one of the agents is also an obvious allusion to Putin). The KGB guy is like "but our economy...we need to reform and we feed you" and the Stasi guy is like "well you stopped feeding us and now you have just totally ruined our mutual home"
The KGBs mission in Berlin to find the old Stasi chiefs personal archive is being sabotaged by a KGB General in Moscow working for the CIA who wants to make sure the CIA finds the archive first. In the archive is proof that the Americans have no intention of not expanding NATO once Gorbachev agrees to the reunification of Germany and that Shevardnadze the Soviet foreign minister knows this and has been keeping it from Gorbachev. I think this series was basically telling the story of the Yakovlev factions coup against Andropovites in the USSRs twilight years while doing a soft white wash of the Andropovites. As Honecker said NO, another solution had to be found. The Lyuch group of the GUR, together with the GDR military secret service, opened the Wall in a deceptive operation on 9 November 1989.
